Citation text line 29 CFR 1926.652(a)(1): Each employee in an excavation was not protected from cave-ins by an adequate protective system designed in accordance with 29 CFR 1926.652(b) or 1926.652(c): a) For the construction site at 8th St. N and Arlington Ave. N, St. Petersburg, FL, as observed on or about 06/04/2015, employees were working in an unprotected excavation that was 5 ft. and 8in. deep. The North bank of the excavation was sloped to 54.3 degrees from the horizontal and the south side was at a 90 degree angle from the horizontal (straight wall). No alternate cave-in protection such as shoring or any other accepted method was in place. The soil was type C. Employees working in the excavation were exposed to cave-in hazards due to inadequate sloping and lack of any other method of cave-in protection.
