FLORIDA CONTAINS THE LARGEST EXTENT OF SEAGRASS IN THE UNITED STATES, WHICH PROVIDES MARINE HABITAT AND ESSENTIAL ECOSYSTEM SERVICES TO COASTAL COMMUNITIES. HOWEVER, RECENT SEAGRASS DIE-OFFS AROUND THE STATE INDICATES THAT CHRONIC WATER QUALITY STRESSORS HAVE NOT BEEN FULLY RESOLVED BY CURRENT MANAGEMENT APPROACHES. THE GULF SHELLFISH INSTITUTE PROJECT WILL BUILD UPON THE UNDERSTANDING OF BIVALVE-SEAGRASS INTERACTIONS AND RESTORATION METHODOLOGY TO TEST THE 'CO-RESTORATION' OF M. CAMPECHIENSIS AND HALODULE WRIGHTII AT MANAGEMENT-RELEVANT SCALE. THIS PROOF-OF-CONCEPT INITIATIVE WILL EVALUATE THE EFFICACY OF USING POSITIVE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN NATIVE HARD CLAMS AND SEAGRASS TO IMPROVE RESTORATION SUCCESS USING TWO APPROACHES: (1) THE DIRECT CO-PLANTING OF HARD CLAMS WITH SEAGRASS AND (2) WHOLE ECOSYSTEM WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT FROM THE RE-ESTABLISHMENT-OF-A-HARD CLAM POPULATION.
